Self Care Tips for New Moms
Self care is one of the most important things to maintain, but often it is also the hardest. Especially for new mothers, looking after yourself can just seem one thing too many on an ever growing list. However, it is important, if not imperative, that you take a little time for yourself and make sure to maintain a healthy balance. Just because you can’t fall back on your old pampering sessions, doesn’t mean there still aren’t ways to decompress after such a huge lifestyle adjustment. Your baby is the most special thing in the world to you, but your well-being should be right behind that so you can be the best parent possible.
Keep A Mental Check In
It can be easy to confuse stress and exhaustion with underlying issues. Because of this, it is important to check in with yourself, as well as your doctor, to make sure everything is well balanced when it comes to your emotions. Postpartum shares symptoms with several other conditions, so don’t overlook tell tale signs. They may be nothing, but better safe than sorry.
Rest and Relaxation
Baby’s quiet time should also mean your own, so when you put him or her down for a nap (or even the night) take some time to rest. Read a book, meditate, or simply close your eyes and let the peace and quiet refresh your weary mind. Don’t spend your baby’s downtime worrying about smaller tasks… those can wait.
Find Support
Once you have your baby, it can be easy to get caught up in a world of diapers, swaddling, snuggles and tantrums, but it’s necessary to have some help. Parenting groups, friends who also have children or even group chats will help to alleviate some of your pent up worries, fears or stress. Besides, these are all great places to share those cute stories that your partner or friends have already heard four or five times.
Health, Nutrition and Hydration
Everyone knows movement and activity create endorphins, but dehydration and poor nutrition can contribute to mood swings and stress. Keep some form of activity in your lifestyle, even if it is just dancing in your living room to your favorite song. Make sure to stay hydrated, and keep a healthy diet to help maintain a positive mindset.
Take a Relaxing Bath
And lastly, taking a shower can seem like a no-brainer, but make sure to give yourself a well-deserved relaxing shower or bath. It can be easy to forget, but works wonders for the mind and body.
